Redear Shellcrackers are native to the southeast United States. They look very similar to bluegill except for coloration. They can grow a good bit larger than bluegill. The male has a distinctive red dot on its gill cover, whereas the female has an orange color dot. Shellcracker are bottom feeders and consume snails and other shell creatures. General stocking guidelines for shellcracker are about 10-20 percent of the bream population.
